Myanmar adviser: Rohingya can return but process to be discussed

Human Rights Watch urged India, the world's biggest democracy, to follow the global principle of non-refoulement which prohibits sending back refugees to a place where their lives are in danger.

Christians gathered together with Sikhs, Hindus, and Muslims at the Aishbagh Eidgah in India to protest the ongoing "genocide" of religious minorities in Rohingya at the hands of the Myanmar government. The plight of the Rohingya people in Myanmar has been making news lately - as well as the silence of Myanmar's Nobel Peace Laureate Aung San Suu Kyi on the issue - but what exactly is the Rohingya Crisis, and how did it happen?

"We feel helpless and hopeless", said Rohingya youth leader Ali Johar, who came to India in 2012 and lives with his family in a Delhi settlement.

While Suu Kyi, Myanmar's de-facto leader, does not control the military, many have been frustrated by her apparent inaction in regards to speaking out on the crisis.

Earlier this year, a United Nations survey found that over half of Rohingya girls who fled to Malaysia, India and Indonesia became child brides.

The Centre told the bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra, Justice A.M. Khanwilkar and Justice D.Y. Chandrachud that many Rohingyas "figure in the suspected sinister designs of ISI/ISIS and other extremist groups who want to achieve their ulterior motives in India including that of flaring up communal and sectarian violence in sensitive areas of the country".

They have always been ostracized in Myanmar, where they are considered illegal immigrants and face severe restrictions. "We must ensure that the ancestor land of the Rohingyas is restored".

We can provide them humanitarian aid like food, medicines, etc, but allowing them to settle in India will not be a wise step. Thus, these citizenship restrictions have essentially rendered the Rohingya stateless. Al-Hussein added that the military was carrying out "a textbook example of ethnic cleansing" and noted that its actions resemble " ...a cynical ploy to forcibly transfer large numbers of people without possibility of return".

The affidavit was submitted as a response to a plea, filed by Rohingya immigrants Mohammad Salimullah and Mohammad Shaqir, claiming they had taken refuge in India after escaping from Myanmar due to widespread discrimination, violence and bloodshed against the community there.

Early on August 25, hundreds of Rohinyga militants stage coordinated attacks on 30 police posts in Myanmar's westernmost state of Rakhine.

"For this reason, Burma should not be surprised to find itself under worldwide scrutiny and on the Security Council's agenda", Johnson said, using the former British colony's earlier name. "This is as bad as anything I've ever seen in terms of the human misery that the Burmese military has created".
