The most profitable FTSE firms are leading the way when it comes to discussing mental health in the workplace, according to new analysis by Soma Analytics.

Since last year's World Mental Health Day, the national conversation on mental health has gained significant momentum.

"I think the evidence is in the stuff that we found. 147 knives being retrieved.That's 147 opportunities we've had to prevent instances of serious harm", Mary Elliffee, from Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust, who helps search patients admitted to a ward, told 5 live Investigates.

The Director of UWA's Centre for Transformative Work Design, Professor Sharon Parker, believes that; "poorly designed work can take a heavy toll on workers' mental health, whereas when work is well-designed, employees will not only be healthier but more productive as well".

Older people also tend to find it more hard to talk about their mental health, as it was a more stigmatised topic when they were growing up, as depression and anxiety were often seen as a sign of weakness.

Numerous staff members who answered the survey say that these problems exist because of understaffing.

"For some they will indeed be recurrent problems that they have long since given up any hope of defeating".

"Our report offers solutions to many of these problems". This includes being bitten, strangled, headbutted and others, according to a survey of over a thousand mental health workers who described their personal experiences to Unison, one of the United Kindgom's biggest trade unions.

In the past year Mental Health First Aid England (MHFA) England has trained a further 65,000 people in Mental Health First Aid.

"Older people are potentially vulnerable and we have to be careful that we don't normalise depression and anxiety as a routine part of ageing", noted RCGP Chair Professor Helen Stokes-Lampard.

"Mental health is a priority for Global Positioning System and we work with people with a wide range of mental health problems. Global Positioning System are the first port of call for many older people, so we are equipping doctors and their teams to better spot and tackle mental ill health in older adults". A third of those surveyed by The Hoxby Collective said they suffered mental health problems as a direct result of working rigid hours, including stress, anxiety, depression and insomnia.

WHO commemorates World Mental Health on October 10 each year to raise awareness on mental health and mobilizing efforts to support better mental health.
