Sheriff: Vegas Gunman Aimed at Fuel Tanks as Diversion

On Monday, Sheriff Joe Lombardo said Stephen Paddock shot and wounded a Mandalay Bay hotel security guard outside his door and sprayed 200 shots down the hall six minutes before he opened fire October 1 from his high-rise suite on a crowd at a country music festival below.

The Las Vegas gunman, who killed concertgoers in the city last weekend leaving 59 people dead and more than 500 people wounded, had first opened fire on a security guard.

Lombardo said Campos, who was responding to a door alarm in another room on the 32nd floor, helped protect a maintenance worker from being injured, but would not weigh in on how Campos's presence might have affected Paddock's plot.

We may never know the answers to these and other questions that were buried within a deeply disturbed and homicidal mind.

And Paddock fired for ten minutes on the crowd before stopping abruptly - for reasons that now have police baffled. He was always seen alone, Lombardo said.

Las Vegas police officers had been searching the hotel for the gunman and did not learn the guard had been shot until they met him in the hallway after getting off the elevator, the sheriff has said.

"Then immediately, upon being injured, he notified security", Sheriff Joseph Lombardo said of the hotel guard at a Monday evening briefing.

Las Vegas police chief had travelled to Mumbai after the November 2008 terrorist attacks on hotels and other sites by suspected Pakistan based Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorists killing 164 people including some American citizens.

"What we have learned is that Mr. Campos was encountered by the suspect prior to his shooting to the outside world", Lombardo told reporters.

A note with calculations of where to aim to maximise casualties was found in the hotel room of Las Vegas gunman Stephen Paddock.

"In coordination with the FBI's Behavioral Analyst Unit, a comprehensive picture is being drawn as to the suspect's mental state and now we do not believe there is one particular event in the suspect's life for us to key in on", Lombardo said.

Authorities are "particularly focused on the period" as Paddock's gambling also began increasing.

Vegas gunman had notes on how to kill
A minute later, the security officer told police he had been shot and gave them the location of Paddock's room . Lombardo added that Paddock fired "well over 200 rounds" into the hallway when the security guard approached.

While the motive has not yet been determined due to his nomadic lifestyle, investigators believe Paddock could have been in mental or physical anguish at the time of the domestic terror attack.

In a timeline released last week, investigators said that the shooting lasted for about nine to 11 minutes.

Eric Paddock said he came to Las Vegas to retrieve his brother's body in hopes of sending the cremated ashes to their 89-year-old mother in Orlando, Fla.

"It's amazing" that Campos didn't sustain more injuries, Lombardo said.

Authorities made elaborate arrangements to assist people with their lost belongings and volunteers filled out intake forms with detailed descriptions of their lost items.
