Twitter blocks Senate candidate from advertising false claim about Planned Parenthood

Twitter shut down Republican Rep. Marsha Blackburn's Senate campaign announcement ad for saying she "stopped the sale of baby body parts".

Included in this vast category were all tweets calling for the removal of Planned Parenthood's federal funding, all tweets reporting on investigations into Planned Parenthood clinics, and any ultrasound images of children. The video can still be linked on YouTube and other video platforms, but Blackburn's campaign can no longer pay for the ad to be promoted on Twitter.

Following the release of the videos and just after the Congressional panel was formed, Planned Parenthood announced that it would no longer take reimbursements for fetal tissue donations.

That includes "inflammatory or provocative content which is likely to evoke a strong negative reaction". But Blackburn is standing her ground.

Blackburn's campaign on Monday responded to Twitter's decision with another tweet, assuring supporters, "Silicon Valley won't stop our conservative movement with censorship".

In the ad, Blackburn shoots a gun and says she's "100 percent pro-life", carries a gun in her purse, and stands during the national anthem.

The panel was created after anti-abortion activists secretly recorded videos in 2015 showing Planned Parenthood officials discussing how they sometimes provide fetal tissue to researchers, which is legal if no profit is made. Just two weeks ago, Twitter said it was not removing President Donald Trump's tweets threatening military action against North Korea in part due to their "newsworthiness" and interest to the public.

The reference to stopping "the sale of unborn baby body parts" is likely a reference to Blackburn's time as chairwoman of the Select Investigative Panel on Infant Lives.
