Woman leaves child, 3, in hot car while visiting inmate, authorities say

The toddler was left alone in the vehicle for over twenty minutes on a day where the heat index was 110 degrees.

Orange County Deputy Ingrid Tejada-Monforte said corrections officials found the child while making rounds at the jail.

Fox 35 reports that 21-year-old Rachel Etienne left her two-year-old daughter in the auto with the engine off as she visited a prisoner in the Orange County Jail.

Rachael Etienne, 21, left her daughter in the vehicle for more than 20 minutes before a corrections officer made rounds around the property and found the girl.

They said the child was drenched in sweat but was otherwise uninjured.

A neighbor of Etienne told FOX35 Orlando she had previously warned Etienne about leaving her daughter in a vehicle. "We actually spoke to her about this before", Brown said. Earlier in the day, Etiennne sat in the jail lobby with her back to reporters.

Deputies said Etienne left the girl in the vehicle for nearly 20 minutes while she visited an inmate. The Department of Children and Families placed the child in the care of another family member, authorities said.

Deputies said Etienne admitted that she had made a mistake and seemed remorseful.
