HP Inc. retained the top spot and further lengthened its lead with almost 23% share of the market, helped in part by major wins in Asia/Pacific.
A new IDC report shows that PC shipments for Q3 2017 showed a 0.5% decline, better than the 1.4% decline forecast.
According to Gartner's latest numbers, published on Tuesday, Apple managed to ship 4.6 million units over the third quarter, down 5.6 percent year over year.
Third-ranked Dell shipped 10.8 million units for a 16.1 per cent global market share. As you can see in the chart below, Gartner found that in the top six, only HP experienced an increase in PC shipments. In China, the PC market is estimated to have declined by 5 percent in the third quarter of 2017, with more stability in the business market, particularly in large enterprises, than in the consumer space.
Although Lenovo slipped further in the States, dropping a staggering 25.2% compared to the same quarter in 2016, which means that Apple is actually the number three PC vendor in the U.S. now. However, HP Inc.is in an upward trend, as it has experienced five consecutive quarter of global PC growth, while Lenovo is in a downward trend with declining shipments in eight of the last 10 quarters.

IDC notes that competitive pressures have further cemented the dominance of the top five PC companies, which accounted for almost 75% of the total traditional PC market.
Gartner's estimates had Dell with a 15.2 per cent share on shipments of 10.1 million units in the third quarter.
Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA): The EMEA traditional PC market continued to show clear signs of progress towards stabilization for another quarter.
Gartner's Kitagawa said shortage in dynamic random-access memory components will "continue to the end of 2018, "but it will not be reflected in the final PC prices immediately".
Windows 10 upgrades continued to feed PC demand among business, Gartner said, but refresh cycles have varied from region to region.

Loren Loverde, IDC worldwide PCD trackers program vice president, says the market performed "much as expected". The outlook for the fourth quarter remains cautious, likely with a small decline in volume for the quarter and the year.
Apple now has an overall market share of 6.9% when it comes to global PC sales.
"The gains in emerging regions and potential for more commercial replacements represent some upside potential, although we continue to expect incremental declines in total shipments for the next few years", Loverde added.
