Egypt unites Palestinian groups Hamas, Fatah

Heniyye's press adviser Tahir en-Nunu, said in a written statement, "Heniyye, Hamas and Fatah, Egypt's intermediate findings, in morning, announcing agreement", he used statement.

"An agreement was reached today between Hamas and Fatah under Egyptian sponsorship", a statement from Hamas leader Ismail Haniya's office said, without giving further details.

Hamas and Fatah officials held two days of talks in Cairo this week about a Palestinian Authority return to Gaza.

The talks between Fatah and Hamas were conducted after Egypt tried several times to resolve the conflict between the two factions and establish a unity government in Gaza and the West Bank.

Such a move would restore a great deal of Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas' influence in Gaza while weakening Hamas' control.

Hamas's capture of Gaza in 2007 ended an earlier - if short-lived - unity government that was established after Hamas swept 2006 Palestinian legislative polls.

Meanwhile, Hamas Politburo chief Ismail Haniyeh told Egyptian television a day later that while his party would not cede control of its weapons, it would be prepared to make joint decisions with Fatah about when and how to use them.

The two sides remain sharply at odds, however, over the future of Hamas's 25,000-strong armed wing, which the terror group says is nonnegotiable.

The latest reconciliation efforts come as US President Donald Trump has sought to revive peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians and met separately with Abbas and Netanyahu on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in NY last month.

REAL ID enforcement grace period extended
