Historic change: Girls now allowed to join Boy Scouts

"I think it's really cool, because then my little sister will be able to come, and then maybe some friends that are, like, girls can hang out with me", Scout Jo Jo Crabtree said.

The organization said they are also establishing a new program for older girls using the same curriculum as the Boy Scouts. The change is to allow girls to participate in our program, starting at 5."The council serves more than 7,000 Scouts a year and has about 2,500 volunteers, serving Scouts in Berks and Schuylkill counties, Milham said.Milham said the Cub Scout program is for ages 5 to 10".

The Boy Scouts board of directors, which approved the plan unanimously in a meeting at BSA headquarters in Texas, said the change was needed to provide more options for parents.

Some people in central in think the expansion is a great idea, but they're interested to see how it will be implemented. "In the USA, 90 percent of female astronauts, 80 percent of female tech leaders, 75 percent of current senators, and 50 percent of female business owners are Girl Scout alumnae".

Both Bozzi and Chace said they're waiting for instructions from the regional Boy Scout Council on how and when the change will be implemented.

Girl Scout officials have suggested the BSA's move was driven partly by financial problems and a need to boost revenue. "Furthermore, it is inherently dishonest to claim to be a single gender organization while simultaneously endeavoring upon a co-ed model".

"When I had daughters I'm very excited", said Tye."Everybody is happy when they have their kids, but I knew that wasn't something I'd get to share with them, but now it is, so it's pretty neat".
