The apex court, while banning the sale of firecrackers till October 31, had said its September 12 order temporarily lifting the stay and permitting sale of firecrackers, would be made effective only from November one. The interim application came up for hearing before a bench headed by Justice A K Sikri.

On Wednesday, traders with temporary licenses approached the apex court seeking a relaxation of the ban on the sale of firecrackers in the national capital and the NCR.

The order of 11 November 2016, suspending licences for sale of firecrackers was operative until the next year but its impact had not been tested during the Diwali period. The bench, however, indicated that it had not put any ban on bursting of crackers.

The top court had recently imposed the ban on fireworks until November 1, saying it wanted to test if it would make a difference to Delhi's air quality, ranked among the worst in the world.
