New Orleans cop dies in line of duty, mayor says


A New Orleans police officer was shot and killed overnight in New Orleans East.

Several officers returned fire and the suspect was hit and brought to a hospital and arrested, authorities said.

The officer was patrolling the area of Tower Lane and Lake Forest Blvd. when he saw something suspicious, according to NOPD Superintendent Michael Harrison.

The shooting occurred just before 12:30 a.m., as the officer exchanged gunfire with a suspect at Cindy Place Apartments.

The slain officer's name wasn't immediately released to allow his relatives the opportunity to notify extended family about his killing.

New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu was on the scene and asked for prayers for the officer.

Police Re-invite Davido Over Friend's Death
Mr Tagbo, a friend of Davido , died on 3 October and his body was reportedly abandoned in front of a hospital in Lagos. Davido has released a statement absolving himself of any foul play in the death of his friend Tagbo Umeike .

"This hurts, I can't begin to tell you how much this hurts", Harrison added.

Paramedics took the officer to University Medical Center, and he died there, Harrison said. She said officers went around knocking on doors and ushered residents out of the building. Eventually, the suspect surrendered peacefully and was transported to a local hospital.

"Our worst nightmares have come to be", Landrieu said.
