Paris is already part of a group of cities that includes Madrid, Mexico City and Athens that plan to end the use of diesel-engined cars by 2025, collectively representing metropolises that are home to 42 million people.
The controversial move announced Thursday follows Mayor Anne Hidalgo's plan to ban all diesel cars from the city by 2024, when Paris will host the Summer Olympics. "Transport is one of the main greenhouse gas producers...so we are planning an exit from combustion engine vehicles, or fossil-energy vehicles, by 2030". "In order to achieve the goal of an end to the thermal engines in 2030, the City has chose to invest in the development of alternatives and in the reinforcement of financial aids that allow individuals and professionals to buy clean vehicles".
Paris City Hall said in a statement France had already set a target date of 2040 for an end to cars dependent on fossil fuels and that this required speedier phase-outs in large cities. Paris has also instituted temporary vehicle bans inside the city in response to pollutant levels in the area, causing some irritation from city dwellers who have to commute by auto.
United Kingdom to conduct next clean energy auctions worth GBP557m in 2019
The UK Government has much more work to do in putting forward credible policies to close a carbon gap of almost 10% by 2032. This wonderful cost reduction is a reminder of what innovative industry can deliver when backed by competitive auctions.
It also touted its investments in public transit and bike lanes.
Many other cities in the world are considering similar moves and China, the world's biggest polluter after the United States, recently announced that it would soon be seeking to get rid of combustion-engine cars too. He said the country intends to be carbon neutral by 2050, a decision he linked to President Trump's decision to withdraw from the Paris climate agreement.
Hidalgo has been seeking to reduce pollution with a series of measures.
Trump warns federal help for Puerto Rico not open-ended
But Trump's top legislative aide warned against expecting Washington's help for long-term infrastructure problems. The Senate is expected to take up the bill early next week.
Paris has faced rising air pollution in the last few years. As a result, the city temporarily alternated between banning cars with even- and odd-numbered license plates.
And Paris City Hall called its third car-free day, banning automobiles in more than 40 square miles for most of October 3. On the Champs-Élysées, noise levels dropped 54 percent. The statement added that Paris officials would keep discussing the issue with residents and vehicle makers in the coming months.
