The US call for action against Iran came after Saudi Arabia announced that its forces intercepted last Saturday over Riyadh airport a ballistic missile launched by the Houthis, which led to the fall of shrapnel over the airport.

"We continue to maintain strong defense ties with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and work together on common security priorities to include combat operations against violent extremist organizations, and neutralizing Iran's destabilizing influence in the Middle East region", said Pentagon spokesman Marine Major Adrian Rankine-Galloway.

The United States called for worldwide action to hold Iran to account after Saudi Arabia accused Teheran of "direct military aggression" over a Yemeni rebel missile attack near Riyadh.

Saudi Arabia has waged a years-long military campaign in Yemen in support of the internationally-recognized government that was driven out of the capital by the Houthis.

Riyadh has accused Tehran of supplying the Shia rebel group with arms, but a senior Iranian official on Monday rejected such accusations.

Regional and Western sources have said Iran is sending advanced weapons and military advisers to the Houthi movement, stepping up support for its Shi'ite ally in the country´s civil war.

Dozens of high-profile figures including princes, ministers and billionaire tycoon Al-Waleed bin Talal were swept up in the weekend purge - just after the creation of an anti-graft commission headed by Prince Mohammed.

The coalition sealed Yemen's air, sea and land borders, saying they were being closed to fill the gaps in inspection procedures that enable "smuggling of missiles and military equipment to the Huthi militias".
