Mobile more than doubles its gigabit LTE availability

T-Mobile also unveiled plans to launch license assisted access (LAA) technology, which uses unlicensed spectrum, on small cells later this year. The Un-carrier has now announced that it has rolled out LTE Advanced networks in over 920 markets passing every other national wireless company. That means T-Mobile customers with capable devices could get Gigabit Class LTE download speeds in 430 markets.

Qualcomm doesn't specify what speeds were being reached during testing, but they did go over what type of technologies T-Mobile is utilizing, plus T-Mobile highlighted another type of advanced LTE tech they intend to incorporate into its network soon.

"This is what I'm talking about when I say T-Mobile has America's best unlimited network and the only one objective built for unlimited", said T-Mobile CTO Neville Ray in a press release. Seeing as 430 of those markets have all three technologies, they are the first to be gigabit LTE compatible. While you can't do much about the latter, since gigabit LTE will get to you when it gets to you, you can get phones that support the technology, though the list is somewhat small. T-Mobile claims the 920 markets surpass those of other carriers that have deployed LTE Advanced technology. The Un-carrier has more than doubled its LTE Advanced footprint since previous year and is swiftly expanding the technology on a very big scale.

To be clear, AT&T, Verizon, and Sprint are also working on gigabit LTE networks. "In addition to providing blazing fast mobile connectivity, Gigabit Class LTE enables operators to expand network capacity to accommodate increasing demands by unlimited data plans, and increases overall spectral efficiency, enabling faster speeds for all users in the network".

And while there's been a lot of talk about 5G speeds, gigabit LTE isn't really that. LAA is said to arrive to T-Mobile's network this year.

Basically what Gigabit LTE technology means for operators-all four of which in the USA are bringing back "unlimited" data offers-is the ability to handle the increasing video traffic more efficiently. Keep in mind that these are demos, so speeds in the real-world might not be as jaw-dropping, but gigabit LTE is still expected to be significantly faster than T-Mobile's current LTE implementation.
