With its new flagship iPhone X, Apple has touted just secure the device's Face ID technology is, and for the most part it's been a hit, with relatively few reports of the system not working properly or letting the wrong person unlock the phone. The Face ID in the iPhone X used for the test was set up using a real person's face.

Now, researchers at a security firm called Bkav claim to have "thwarted" Face ID by using a specially-built mask.

Considering tablet sizes, Face ID may not cut off the iPad Pro screen. Instead of making a realistic mask, the security firm crafted an elaborate mask with the sole objective of beating Face ID and the iPhone X's depth mapping technology.

"The mask is crafted by combining 3D printing with makeup and 2D images, besides some special processing on the cheeks and around the face, where there are large skin areas, to fool AI of Face ID", explained Mr. Ngo Tuan Anh, Bkav's Vice President of Cyber Security. However, the demo shows the iPhone unlocking in the first try itself, although it is not clear how many unsuccessful attempts Bkav had before producing a mask that actually worked. Really hard to do the "right" mask, without a specific knowledge security. However, surveys have shown that people are interested in the Apple iPhone X 256GB model more than the base model which will cost around $999 without tax.
