The night's big victor, Mendes, sung his best song-winning track "There's Nothing Holding Me Back" from a huge light box.

Canadian teen singer Shawn Mendes on Sunday won best artist and best song at the MTV Europe Music Awards (EMA) in London, pipping heavyweight competitors such as Taylor Swift, Miley Cyrus and Ed Sheeran. Fittingly, he also took the prize for best fans. The rapper picked up the best hip hop gong.

"I'm not really sure how I got this, 'cause I haven't had an album out in a few years" he quipped in his acceptance speech, adding "I got one coming though".

Rita Ora hosted and performed, opening the show alongside Kurupt FM, the stars of BBC comedy "People Just Do Nothing", with a skit that featured London Mayor Sadiq Khan.
