Abe says agreed with Putin to implement United Nations sanctions on North Korea


Duterte said the Philippines "condemns" the launching of missiles by North Korean Leader Kim Jong Un.

The statement was made during Duterte's bilateral meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC) Monday night.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and his counterparts from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations held the annual Japan-ASEAN summit on Monday in Manila, during which Abe said Japan and ASEAN should lead the development of a "free and open" worldwide order.

At the outset of the meeting on the sidelines of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations summit, Abe called the North Korea issue "the immediate challenge facing our three countries, which share fundamental values and strategic interests".

"We need to make North Korea change their policy by enhancing the pressure applied to North Korea to the highest level by all available means, including the full implementation of the Security Council's resolutions", Abe said.

Japan does not face the South China Sea, but the Abe administration has devoted much energy to the issue in light of both Japan's reliance on shipping lanes in the area and Beijing's separate claim to the Japan-controlled Senkaku Islands in the East China Sea.
