Trade and concern about possible protectionism under Trump's "America First" agenda have come up during his regional visit, which has included stops in Japan, South Korea, China, Vietnam and the Philippines.

"We've explained that the United States is open for trade but we want reciprocal, we want fair trade for the United States", he said. Mr Modi also assured President Trump that India will try to "live up to the expectations" of the US and the world and thanked the US President for speaking "highly" about India during his trips. He did not elaborate.

Trump was supposed to join hands with Vietnam's Prime Minister, Nguyen Xuan, and Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte, but instead ended up cradling Nguyen's hand with both of his - breaking the line in two.

A joint statement after the meeting said the two sides "underscored that human rights and the dignity of human life are essential, and agreed to continue mainstreaming the human rights agenda in their national programs".

Earlier in the day, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau raised the plight of Rohingya refugees and extra-judicial killings in the Philippines at the summit, sensitive human rights issues skirted by nearly all the others.

His administration has said that those carrying out the killings have been acting in self defense, but many have condemned the extrajudicial slayings as a major human rights violation.

"The Prime Minister took the opportunity to invite President Duterte for the (2018) commemorative summit that will be held next year which President Duterte gladly accepted, as have other ASEAN leaders", she added. "And the ASEAN conference has been handled beautifully by the president in the Philippines".

Duterte has been a controversial figure since taking office as president past year, and launching a war on drugs that has killed at least 3,900 people in the Philippines.

President Moon Jae-in and Chinese President Xi Jinping agreed to hold a third bilateral summit next month in China. Xi noted his meeting with the South Korean leader marked a turnaround in South Korea-China relations.

Trump is winding down his lengthy Asia trip by meeting with Pacific Rim allies, including Duterte who is overseeing a bloody drug war.

The handshake chain is a set piece during the gathering of the 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) which met in Manila on Monday.
