Adrian Rankine-Galloway, a U.S. marines major and a military spokesman, told Middle East Eye that the latest Russian claims represented "just one more episode of a recurrent pattern of defamation, distortion, distraction that seeks to discredit the United States and our successful coalition fight against ISIS in Syria". The CIT also says the statement contains a second error involving a freeze-frame taken from a video released in June 2016 by the Iraqi defence ministry showing an air raid against ISIS forces fleeing from Fallujah and not from Abu Kamal towards the Iraqi-Syrian border.

The ministry is investigating its civil employee who attached a wrong photo to illustrate the ministry's statement on Abu Kamal. To this aim, the coalition's attack aircraft entered the airspace over the 15-km zone around the city to hamper the Russian aircraft' mission, it said.

"These facts are conclusive evidence that the United States, while imitating an uncompromising fight against worldwide terrorism for the global community, in fact provides cover for Islamic State units", the defense ministry said.

The flags used by Syrian Democratic Forces units found in Abu Kamal confirm that, the Russian Defense Ministry noted.
