United Kingdom drone users to sit safety tests under new law

DRONE users could be made to sit safety awareness tests under a shake-up of laws to make our skies safer. It then devised measures for passing the Drone Bill along with secondary legislation amendments.

The UK Government is to propose the new drone legislation in the spring of 2018, and as well as pilots completing a safety test, the rules could see no-fly zones more widely enforced in sensitive locations like airports.

The proposed Drone Bill would make changes to the existing Air Navigation Order, and will be presented later this spring. Officers will also be able to seize drone parts to prove it has been used to commit an offense.

Run by Nest in partnership with Innovate UK and funded through the government's Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund the so-called Flying High Challenge will work with up to five cities (through an open call selection process) to explore how drones could be usefully applied in urban areas. Organ transportation and parcel delivery are cited as two possible future uses. "Drones can bring economic and workplace safety benefits but to achieve those we need everyone flying a drone now to do so safely".

UK Aviation Minister Baroness Sugg said the government wanted to strike the right balance between harnessing drone potential and ensuring they are not misused.

A new challenge has been set today to invite cities to design how drone technology could be used to support their local needs - from transporting urgent medical supplies to flood search and rescue and maintenance and inspection for icons like The Blackpool Tower.

In 2016, the United Kingdom government took a survey for public consultation to address safety, security, and privacy challenges about the drone technology.

"The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) supports the safe development of drones in the United Kingdom", says Tim Johnson, the UK's Civil Aviation Authority's policy director.

"Do not take this lightly - if you use a drone to invade people's privacy or engage in disruptive behaviour, you could face serious criminal charges".

The government already dictated its plan for registering drones weighing 250 grams or more.

With every carrot comes a stick and the draft drone bill doesn't hold back.

While the United Kingdom now has a Drone Code meant to encourage drone operators to fly safely and responsibly, there have still been multiple reports of near misses between drones and aircraft - and the government clearly feels the code needs to be backed up by new laws and powers.
