How the Snapchat Stories-like tool works — YouTube Reels explained


The feature resembles the short-form video format pioneered by Snapchat Stories, which has since been adopted by Instagram, Skype, Facebook and Facebook's Messenger app, according to TechCrunch.

YouTube, the Google-owned video service with 1.5 billion monthly visitors, is testings "Reels" for content creators who have more than 10,000 subscribers on the platform, per a company blog post. They are now in a beta-testing phase. Most significant divergence from the other stories features is that the Reels would not be disappearing after some set time or after twenty-four hours. YouTube is also integrating features already available on Community for Reels. As for the channel subscribers, they will be able to find past Reels. You would also have to navigate to the creators channel to view them.

How do YouTube Reels work? Mind you, with Snapchat and Instagram, your posts are temporary and part of one, singular story. The Reels are labelled and can apparently contain many videos; we spot one in the preview that shows "120" - presumably that's the number of videos in the reel. It will permanently live in a tab separate from a creator's main list of videos.Furthermore, users can have several Reels with no expiry date.
