The Penn State junior did not win the award because of what he did on the field this season - or at least that's the message the Big Ten coaches and media voters are sending. The Big Ten named him the victor of its George-Graham Offensive Player of the Year, its Amaeche-Dayne Running Back of the Year and Rogers-Dwight Return Specialist of the Year awards, a clean sweep of honors for a player who amassed 2,154 total yards and 21 touchdowns this season.

He joins Curtis Enis (1996-97) as the only Penn State running backs to be first-team selections in back-to-back seasons. There were many struggles on special teams his first couple of years, but Franklin stuck with him in the coordinator role, and the units developed into big weapons the past two seasons. Penn State DB Marcus Allen rounds out the first team. He owns Penn State career records for tight ends with 123 receptions, 1,419 yards and 15 TD receptions.

Award winners are chosen by a vote of coaches and a media panel.

Ohio State linemen Nick Bosa and Tyquan Lewis also are on the first team, along with linebacker Josey Jewell and defensive back Josh Jackson of Iowa. He leads the conference and ranks 21st nationally in passing yards with 269.0 per game.

He leads the Big Ten and ranks 14th in the FBS with 304.9 total yards per game.

He's accounted for 37 touchdowns, 26 passing and 11 rushing, which ranks seventh in the FBS.

Ohio State's J. T. Barrett is the first-team quarterback.

Has 18 career games with multiple passing touchdowns (one in 2015, eight in 2016, nine in 2017).

Schultz, like many of Stanford's other upperclassmen, knew better than to be too discouraged by an early-season defeat. The star for the Trojans remains quarterback Sam Darnold , rated the No. 3 overall pro prospect by NFLDraftScout.com.

Redshirt junior quarterback Trace McSorley made the second team in both the coaches and media balloting, while one of his favorite targets, senior DaeSean Hamilton, earned second-team honors from the coaches and third-team from the media.

Offensive tackle Ryan Bates made both third teams, and WR Juwan Johnson received honorable mention. He became the first Penn State offensive lineman to be named to the first, second or third team since John Urschel was a first-team pick in 2013.

Wisconsin and Penn State played six common opponents (Indiana, Iowa, Maryland, Michigan, Nebraska and Northwestern), and while the pair had similar yardage totals in those games (Taylor, 972; Barkley, 961), Taylor had a higher yards-per-carry average (6.5 vs. 6.1) and only one game below 125 rushing yards (Barkley had four such games).
