Metro School is Taking Advantage of 'Computer Science Education Week'

Kennedy Catholic, many took part in the event known as the Hour of Code on Monday, a program that encourages learning the fundamentals of technology during Computer Science Education Week.

Those who made the pledge include Florida Governor Rick Scott, who made a $15 million investment to increase opportunities for middle and high school students and California Lt. Governor Gavin Newsom, who launched a Computer Science for California campaign to bring CS education to all students in California by 2025.

Fifth grade student Ajhawer Guy said he likes how complicated computer science can be. Code.org, which has raised more than $60 million from Microsoft, Facebook, Google, and Salesforce, was one of the first companies to tap into the demand for preteen programming literacy.

The announcement came as part of a Computer Science Education Week kickoff event in San Mateo. And yet, only 11 states have created K-12 computer science standards.

According to Code.org, computing jobs are the No. 1 source of new wages in the United States-these are jobs in every industry, and they're projected to grow at twice the rate of all other jobs. "I'm looking forward to kicking off Computer Science Week at Phoenix Coding Academy and seeing firsthand their commitment to providing Arizona students with rigorous, high-quality computer science education that equips them for today's job-market".

Partovi also stressed that in order to increase the number of female and minority students participating in computer science classes, high schools should allow computer science classes to count toward a student's required classes to graduate, rather than counting it as an elective course. This year's Computer Science Education Week started today and runs through December 10.
