50 injured in Germany train accident


At least 50 people were injured in a collision between a passenger train and a freight train near the German city of Duesseldorf on Tuesday evening, police told AFP.

The incident took place near the Meerbusch-Osterath train station in North-Rhine Westphalia, the most populous state in Germany.

The passenger train, owned by private British operator National Express, collided with a stationary cargo train owned by German Rail (Deutsche Bahn) at 7:30 p.m. local time (1830 UTC).

Emergency crews were on the scene and were helping unload people from the train. "Three people have moderate injuries and another three people have serious injuries", Meerbusch fire department said in a statement.

"According to our latest information five people were hurt, none of them have life threatening injuries", it said.

The train had around 100 passengers on board. "The firefighters are in contact with people on the train", the fire department added.
