Lena Dunham tells the Times she warned the Clinton campaign to distance itself from Weinstein in March 2016.

"I think it's a really bad idea for him to host fund-raisers and be involved because it's an open secret in Hollywood that he has a problem with sexual assault", she recalled adding.

The "Girls" star told the newspaper that she also warned Adrienne Elrod, a Clinton spokeswoman, about rumors surrounding Weinstein.

Weinstein, who prominently advocated for Clinton's presidential bid by holding fundraisers and other public events, is now being investigated for multiple claims of sexual assault and rape.

In the Times interview, Dunham says she approached Clinton's team point blank - not Clinton herself, though - with a strong warning to an apparently "surprised" Kristina Schake, deputy communications director for the Clinton campaign.

In a a statement with her co-creator, Dunham said they believed the allegations were false, and that they stood by Murray. Pecker is also good friends with President Donald Trump, and both Weinstein and Trump were known in the tabloid industry as untouchable "F.O.P's", the Times said.
