Air New Zealand cancels flights following Rolls-Royce engine trouble

The problems come after a year ago All Nippon Airways (ANA), found a problem with the group's engines in its fleet of Boeing 787 Dreamliners.

Air New Zealand has been forced to ground some of its worldwide flights after revealing some of the Rolls-Royce engines mounted had to be inspected.

The Star Alliance carrier says that following two recent events, Rolls-Royce has advised that its fleet's Trent 1000 engines "require maintenance sooner than previously indicated".

The move is in response two recent incidents involving 787-9 flights and based on advice from the engine manufacturer, Air New Zealand said on Thursday.

Air New Zealand is cancelling and delaying some flights due to problems with Rolls-Royce Holdings' (LON:RR) engines, Reuters has reported.

Media reports suggested passengers felt the aircraft shake and the electrical power was lost in the cabin for a moment amid some loud noises.

The schedule changes are primarily affecting services to Houston, Shanghai, Buenos Aires and Perth, and the carrier says it is focused on securing replacement aircraft capacity. They shut down the engine and returned to the airport.

Earlier this year, Virgin Atlantic switched one of its daily trans-Atlantic flights to Delta Air Lines, which bought a 49% stake in Virgin Atlantic in 2012, to allow the Trent 1000 engines mounted on its 787 Dreamliners to undergo maintenance.
