Congress grills Trump Jr. on 2016 meeting as Russian Federation probe picks up

The eldest first son said President Trump was only debating whether they should release a longer or a shorter statement, the network said.

During eight hours of questioning by the House intelligence committee on Wednesday, Donald Trump Jr. acknowledged that he and his father had discussed news of his controversial 2016 meeting with a Russian lawyer after the New York Times revealed the secret sitdown this summer.

Trump Jr. said he didn't tell the president about the June 2016 meeting between Trump campaign officials and several Russian operatives when it happened, and he declined to say what he told his father after the meeting was disclosed to the public this year.

Trump Jr.'s lawyer, Alan Futerfas, said last month that there was only "small talk" between them.

Committee Democrats subsequently questioned the legitimacy of Trump Jr.'s privilege claim and raised the possibility of seeking a subpoena to compel him to answer.

But Trump Jr. did not provide details about communications with his father and invoked attorney-client privilege because of the presence of attorneys during the exchange with his father. He acknowledged having discussed the June 9 meeting and the emails that went into establishing that meeting after those emails became public. "So, uh, we intend to persist and make sure we get answers to that question".

However, Rep. Mike Conaway, the Texas Republican leading the committee's Russian Federation investigation, did not express the same concerns as Schiff about Trump Jr.'s response.

A Republican source added Trump Jr. was asked about some Trump Organization business going back decades and at times based on old news reports about his father.
