Lubaina Himid wins Turner Prize 2017

Accepting her prize, Himid began by thanking the people of Hull, saying: "First of all to the people who stopped me to wish well".

The Preston, England-based artist was awarded the 25,000-pound ($34,000) prize at a ceremony in the English city of Hull.

Lubaina Himid, a key figure of the Black Arts Movement, was named as the victor of this year's Turner Prize for art on Tuesday evening at a ceremony in the northern English city of Hull. The shortlisted artists for 2017 were: Hurvin Anderson, Andrea Büttner, Lubaina Himid and Rosalind Nashashibi.

Nashashibi, 43, had two films on show in Hull.

The Turner Prize award money is 40,000 pounds ($54,000), with 25,000 pounds going to the victor and 5,000 pounds each for the other short-listed artists.

The jury applauded the four nominated artists for their socially engaged and visually imaginative work.

Alongside Mr. Farquharson, the members of this year's jury were Dan Fox, writer and co-editor of Frieze; Martin Herbert, art critic; Mason Leaver-Yap, associate curator at KW Institute for Contemporary Art in Berlin; and Emily Pethick, director of the Showroom gallery in London.

The Turner Prize exhibition is on display until January 7, 2018.

Tuesday night was a historical moment for the world of contemporary art. While best known as a filmmaker, she's also known as painter, her most popular piece being 2015's "Electrical Gaza".

Lubaina Himid has won the Turner Prize for what judges describe as her "expansive and exuberant approach to painting, which combines satire and a sense of theatre".

Since the 1980s, Himid has focused on a range of subjects related to race, from matters of the African diaspora to the visibility of black artists in museums.
