Snow and ice warning issued for north-west

There are two weather warnings in place as unsettled weather approaches Ireland.

North and northwest counties are said to be most at risk, as well as higher ground elsewhere.

A wind warning has been put in place in Donegal, Galway, Leitrim, Mayo, Sligo, Clare and Kerry from 3 am this morning to 8 pm Thursday evening.

A Snow and Ice weather warning issued by Met Eireann comes into force later today.

The forecasters initially issued an orange weather warning to counties Cavan, Monaghan, Donegal, Longford, Leitrim, Mayo and Sligo. This means icy roads, particularly in the north and west of the country.

"The showers will turn increasingly wintry with falls of hail and snow - especially in the north, and a few will push further south this evening".

"Scattered showers will occur later on Thursday, Thursday night and into Friday". Temperatures will be low and it will stay cold for most of next week.

It is one of three weather warnings now in place around the country.
