Toyota adds Amazon Alexa to select Toyota and Lexus models

Toyota said Tuesday it will introduce Amazon Alexa, Amazon's cloud-based voice-assistant, in some Toyota and Lexus vehicles in 2018. This feature will allow Toyota and Lexus customers in the United States to interact with Alexa in the auto. Toyota hasn't announced which models will be able to connect to Amazon Alexa this year, but more Toyota and Lexus vehicles are expected to get the feature in 2019.

Alexa will be able to aid drivers and passengers with directions, news, shopping, and smart home control from the vehicle, among other functions.

"We're thrilled that Toyota and Lexus will bring Alexa to customers on the road", said John Scumniotales, head of product for Amazon Alexa Automotive.

Toyota Motor Corp. joins Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV, Nissan Motor Co., Hyundai Motor Co., Daimler AG, BMW AG and Ford Motor Co.in either letting Alexa into their vehicles or integrating the voice service into the connectivity systems that link customers' cars and mobile phones.

Alexa is Amazon's intelligent virtual assistant, similar to Siri or Cortana, which can interact with users via voice, make lists, set alarms, provide news and weather information, as well as control smart devices connected via the internet.
