Young bodybuilder dies days after contracting the flu

So far this season, 18 flu deaths have been reported in Pennsylvania.

Kyler Baughman, 21, passed away on December 28 after experiencing organ failure due to septic shock that was caused by having the flu, WPXI reports. When Baughman came home to visit during the holidays however, he appeared to be sick.

He managed to attend a family get-together and celebrated again on December 24, before attempting to return to work December 26. He came home early that day because he was still feeling sick.

"He kinda just laid down and went about his day and that was the day he was coughing and said his chest hurt, he had a mild cough", she explained.

Baughman's parents said that they think their son did not get vaccinated this season, and while reports state that the flu vaccine is less effective this year than last, it still cuts a person's chances of getting infected by as much as 60%. He was airlifted to a local hospital after being taken to the emergency room.

The young personal trainer was described as fit and healthy before contracting flu-like symptoms.

But the flu, which is causing havoc around the world this winter, can be life-threatening, or cause potentially fatal complications, for adults of any age.

"Organ failure due to septic shock caused by influenza", she said.

Baughman told WPXI she believes her son didn't grasp the magnitude of his condition and thought he'd "rest a little bit" and feel better.

Kyler Baughman's relatives are cautioning others about the risks of flu after he dead of complexities from the infection a week ago at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center in Pennsylvania, WXPI revealed.

Following the unexpected death of their son, the Baughmans are urging everybody to take flu symptoms more seriously and get treatment as soon as possible. You know whenever you have a fever, and you have it multiple days, just don't let it go.

"I just think he ignored it and thought it'd go away like most people, and I think people need to pay more attention to their bodies", said Beverly Baughman.
