PIL against Calcutta University's decision to award CM with D.Litt

Among other grounds for opposition, the PIL says Banerjee had once declared to have completed Ph.D degree, but in March 1985, it was found that the University of East Georgia from which she claimed to have secured the degree did not even exist.

Like every year, this year too, the West Bengal Government has set up all the facilities for a successful Gangasagar Mela, and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has taken a leading part.Lakhs of pilgrims have arrived from all over India, and many from other countries too. "Today, I am again appealing for resistance to distorting history", Banerjee said at the varsity's convocation ceremony. "It's unprecedented and not consistent with the law of the university", said Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharjee, advocate of the Ranjugopal Mukherjee, former vice chancellor of the North Bengal University.

Costa got on the scoresheet in the 70th minute after Diego Godin and Fernando Torres both struck in the first half. But it nearly threatened to ruin his second debut after he injured his knee over-stretching to bag the third goal.

According to the PIL, the decision of the syndicate and senate of the CU to confer the Trinamul Congress supremo with a D.Litt was arbitrary and lacks logic.

Meanwhile, a public interest litigation (PIL) was filed in the Calcutta High Court challenging the University's move to confer the honourary doctorate on Banerjee.

Hospital Bosses To Update Health Minister On Overcrowding
Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has apologised to patients who have experienced long delays and waits on trolleys in emergency departments. The Health Minister has insisted "no effort or resource is being spared" to improve the overcrowding situation in hospitals .

Petitioners also argue that serious doubts have already been raised in public domain over academic credentials of Mamata Banerjee including her so-called "PhD Degree" which she herself refrains from using.

In 2007 Jyoti Basu was awarded Doctor of Law by CU when he had stepped down as chief minister in the last leg of the Left Front rule. "The same people have made a decision to honour the chief minister with the honorary D.Litt", Ahmed claimed.
