Five law enforcement officers were shot, one fatally, after responding to a domestic disturbance call at an apartment complex south of Denver on Sunday morning, the Douglas County Sheriff's Office said.

The two civilians were not identified, but Sheriff Spurlock said they sustained non-life-threatening injuries. Riehl was killed and a fourth officer was wounded.

Adding, 'Zack was a good kid, a smiley kid... "He was eager to work, eager to serve".

"Once they were there they were met with gunfire form the suspect", Spurlock said at a news conference.

When the deputies were called back due to a noise complaint, they were given a key to the suspect's apartment and permission to enter by another man.

Authorities say the deputies were responding to a disturbance in an apartment complex located in Highland Ranch, about 16 miles south of the Mile High City. "He knew we were coming, and we obviously let him know we were there to investigate the disturbance".

The roommate of the Riehl is cooperating with law enforcement. Officers were invited inside the apartment upon their arrival, but gunfire began shortly afterward and lasted almost two hours.

At least 100 rounds were fired by a man armed with a rifle, police said. Over 100 total rounds were fired in the exchange.

The injured officers were identified as Mike Doyle, 28; Taylor Davis, 30; Jeffrey Pelle, 32, and Tom O'Donnell 31.

Students had been warned about Riehl, a former student, in November and told that if he or his auto were spotted on campus, they should contact campus police immediately because of social media posts critical of professors at the school.

"I told her to stay inside", Silknitter told the Denver Post, recalling that he lived in Aurora in 2012 not far from the infamous movie theater shooting. "That will help me answer some of those questions", Spurlock said.
