Zuma to set up commission to probe influence-peddling

The Constitutional Court had ruled almost two weeks ago that MPs failed to hold Zuma accountable for the millions in public money used to upgrade his personal residence.

The president said that "this matter can not wait any longer".

"We, therefore, call for unnecessary divisive pressure with regards to the future of President Jacob Zuma as president of the Republic of South Africa to be avoided", Maphatsoe said.

President Jacob Zuma's possible removal was not discussed by the ANC's new national executive committee (NEC) at their first meeting in East London on Wednesday, Business Day reported.

While Lemar may not make up for the loss of Coutinho in the goals department, the Frenchman has been impressive creatively. He established himself as a key man in the Monaco side, helping the team land the Ligue 1 title in 2016-17.

The ANC's top decision makers also meet this week, and Zuma's recall is expected to be on the agenda.

Zuma, who has denied wrongdoing, said he has appealed the order to pay the costs himself but is moving ahead with a commission of inquiry because "this matter has occupied the public mind for some time now and deserves urgent attention".

"The commission is a step towards ridding the country of corruption, and must do its work without delay", DA leader Mmusi Maimane said in a statement.

"The procedures for election and removal of president of South Africa are clearly set out in the constitution, and it is not our intention in this letter to recount each and every constitutional provision, other than reminding the NEC that you are not an appointing nor a removal authority about any person holding or due to hold position of president of South Africa". But the priority was not "alienating his KwaZulu-Natal support base".

Before taking office, Zuma dismayed the nation during his 2006 rape trial when he told the court he had showered after having unprotected sex with his young HIV-positive accuser to avoid, he said, contracting the virus.

Zuma was acquitted of rape but is often mocked in newspaper cartoons depicting him with a shower nozzle sprouting from his bald head.
