Federal government awards San Diego $20 million for the homeless


The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development awarded more than $4 million to 26 homeless programs in Arkansas on Thursday.

Housing for homeless people in San Francisco got a boost Thursday when the federal government announced it is giving the city $9 million more than it did past year as part of its annual funding for homeless programs around the nation.

"We know how to end homelessness and it starts with embracing a housing-first approach that relies upon proven strategies that offer permanent housing solutions".

New federal funding is heading to New Jersey to help support efforts to put an end to homelessness in the state. California received roughly $382 million, the most of any state.

Last month, HUD reported homelessness crept up in the US, especially among individuals experiencing long-term chronic homelessness.

San Francisco had a homeless population of about 7,500 in 2017, according to a Homeless Point-in-Time count survey, or a "homeless census" conducted by the city a year ago. That was 0.7 percent higher than in 2016.

HUD estimates there were 553,742 persons experiencing homelessness on a single night nationally in 2017, and increase of.7 percent since previous year. Local Massachusetts communities also report the number of persons experiencing long-term chronic homelessness decreased.

HUD's Continuum of Care grants totaled $2.01 billion for the 2017-18 fiscal year, dispersed to localities throughout the country, as well as Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
