Orioles avoid arbitration with Machado, Britton, 3 others

Toronto's Josh Donaldson, Baltimore's Manny Machado, Washington's Anthony Rendon and the Chicago Cubs' Kris Bryant were among the more than 170 players headed to the exchange.

The Baltimore Orioles agreed to one-year deals with third baseman Manny Machado and injured closer Zach Britton on Friday, thus avoiding arbitration.

The Orioles had two hearings past year, winning one against Joseph and losing to Brach - the first time the club had lost an arbitration hearing since Ben McDonald in 1995. Coming into 2017, Machado's career batting average was over.280, but his mark of.259 a year ago lowered his total to.279.

Machado was obviously the most interesting case heading into Friday, considering he has been the subject of trade rumors in his last season before free agency.

The two-time Gold Glove victor has been in the top five of American League MVP voting on two occasions.

Last year Machado earned a base salary of $11.5 million.

Rendon set career bests with a.301 average, 25 homers and 100 RBIs for the Nationals and made $5.8 million.

Technically, the Orioles could have offered up to a 20 percent cut in Britton's salary, but the 30-year-old pitcher and his agent, Scott Boras, certainly would have had a strong case before an arbitration panel that Britton didn't deserve a paycut after an effective - albeit truncated - 2017.

Other arbitration-eligible Orioles players include second baseman Jonathan Schoop and right-hander Kevin Gausman.

The Orioles finished 75-87 last season, last place in the American League East. Rosenthal characterized Arizona as the most persistent among the interested teams.
