Gardner added, "It is essential for residents of the City of St. Louis and our state to have confidence in their leaders". Greitens denied claims that he took nude photos of her and threatened to release them publicly if she disclosed the relationship.

News of the ad being pulled follows a bombshell news report as Greitens on Wednesday night acknowledged that he's been "unfaithful" in his marriage. Update 4:20 p.m.: The calls for an investigation into Greitens' alleged blackmail have gone beyond the legislature. An FBI spokeswoman declined comment. This is a three-year-old personal matter that presents no matters of public or legal interest. The facts will prove that fully.

She asked Greitens, whom she called by his first name, to "please consider all who are involved and the circumstances around us".

The statement reads: The serious allegations against Missouri Governor Eric Greitens are very troubling.

The affair was "a deeply personal mistake", the statement said.

"Eric took responsibility, and we dealt with this honestly and privately", the statement continued. Greitens was an Angier B. Duke Scholar, Rhodes Scholar and served as a Navy Seal.

The St.Louis Post Dispatch was also offered the story. His wife, Sheena Chestnut Greitens, is an assistant professor of political science at the University of Missouri, and a nonresident senior fellow at the Center for East Asian Policy Studies at the Brookings Institution in Washington. His GOP campaign for governor in 2016 promoted, in part, his character and his belief in family values.

The woman said the sexual encounter itself was consensual.

The allegations against Greitens came as the governor delivered his State of the State address. "According to the account he gave me, she replied that she had had sex with her husband, at which time Greitens slapped her". She said on the tape that he invited her downstairs at his home because he wanted to show her "how to do a proper pull-up". "And he used some sort of tape, I don't know what it was, and taped my hands to these rings and then put a blindfold on me". "I want the media and those who wish to peddle gossip to stay away from me and my children.' Now we know who has been peddling that gossip".

Neither the governor or his wife said anything about the reported photo shoot or the alleged blackmail threat. The other source is the ex-husband's lawyer, who is not mentioned in Bennett's statement.
