Trump likely to meet Macron in Davos: White House

President Trump plans to hobnob with some of the world's wealthiest and most powerful figures at the World Economic Forum at Davos, Switzerland, The White House said Tuesday.

During today's White House press briefing, Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin was pressed on this matter.

"I don't think it is a hangout for globalists", Mnuchin insisted.

The president told the Wall Street Journal that he wants to be a "cheerleader" for the American economic success story in the first year of his administration.

He continued, "We are thrilled that the president is coming".

The U.S. typically sends a high-ranking delegation to the meeting of government and business leaders. This year's forum is scheduled to run January 23-26. Trump will be only the second sitting president to attend the Davos conference, after former President Clinton.

Trump said this a day after he opened to the press nearly his entire meeting with the Congressional leadership on immigration.

The group will include President Donald Trump and his chief of staff John Kelly, as well as his son-in-law Jared Kushner, his senior economic adviser Gary Cohn and his national security advisor H.R. McMaster. "This is about meeting business leaders and meeting our counterparts".

Trump, who is likely to advance his "America First" agenda with world leaders at this year's WEF, would be the first sitting USA president to attend the high-profile summit since Bill Clinton in 2000. They will arrive on Monday and leave Wednesday in part to free hotel rooms for Trump's delegation, which arrives on Thursday, the person said. "We have obviously been very clear with the Chinese on the issue that we have with the trade deficit and making sure that USA companies can compete fairly".
