Donald Trump's reason for skipping United Kingdom questioned, even by embassy

"Just like the rest of the country, we woke up to the news of Trump having canceled his visit", Treacy said. Mr Johnson suggested that Sadiq Khan, the mayor of London, and Jeremy Corbyn, the Labour leader, had scuppered the chance of a visit from the U.S. president in an effort to draw a partisan line on the issue.

A United Kingdom official said on Friday that the invitation to Trump for a state visit, first extended by May during her visit to the U.S. early in Trump's presidency, still stands, the CNN report said. "Bad deal. Wanted me to cut the ribbon - NO!"

However, the embassy website showed the decision to move the location was made in 2008 under George W Bush, months before Barack Obama took office in January 2009.

"The project has been executed within the established budget", an embassy spokesman said, adding it had "considered more than 50 sites" in London ahead of the move, which cost up to $1billion and "used no tax dollars".

Trump is hugely controversial figure in Britain where he recently succeeded in uniting politicians across the political aisle when he retweeted a far-right group's anti-Muslim videos.

Trump's cancellation was met with humour on social media, with parodies of the president's tweet trending on Twitter.

When asked why he had dirt under his fingernails, the friend reportedly told police he "fell into a dirt puddle". DNA tying Woodward to the crime has also been obtained, Barnes said, but he declined to provide specifics.

Trump claimed he had scrapped the visit because he didn't want to open the new United States embassy in the British capital, but Khan suggested the real reason was because he wouldn't be welcome.

The mayor, a member of the main opposition Labour party, said there would have been "mass peaceful protests", and that it had been a "mistake" to invite him.

Some British lawmakers questioned whether Trump would be welcome in London because of previous tweets and criticism of Muslims and his sniping at London Mayor Sadiq Khan in the aftermath of a terror attack in that city a year ago.

British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson fired back at Khan on Twitter, saying on Friday that he would "not allow US-UK relations to be endangered" by the London Mayor, whom he referred to as a "pompous puffed up popinjay in City Hall".
