GOP Lawmaker Issa to Step Down, Raising Democrats' Hopes

Issa, 64, became the 32nd House Republican to announce that they will not seek re-election in November, not counting those who left the House early a year ago. They're leaving from all over the map, from southern New Jersey to southern New Mexico.

Democrats need to pick up 24 seats to win control of the House. Not only was Issa a nine-term incumbent but as one of the richest members of Congress, he was able to self-fund his campaign. "Pro-growth, pro-business candidates can come from both sides and we want more from both sides". Over the weekend, GOP leadership presented several options to the president for participation in this year's elections. But seats are opening up all over.

Republicans are up to their same tricks, relying on racist tropes to try to draw out their base for a special election in portions of Henry and Newton Counties taking place on Tuesday, January 9. Reps. Frank LoBiondo of New Jersey and Charlie Dent of Pennsylvania were courted during the health care debates for their votes. He voted against the proposal, saying residents in his district could see higher taxes.

Here's the breakdown by number of seats in each cycle. And not all of the vacancies are coming from Republicans.

Are Raptors finally built to beat Cavs in playoffs?
By contrast, the Warriors lead the league in scoring (115.7 points per game) and three-point shooting (39 per cent). The Cavaliers are hoping for a better outcome after their 133-99 loss to the Toronto Raptors in their last contest.

Senator Tom Carper of DE, the top Democrat on the committee, praised the meeting as an opportunity to work with the administration.

Numerous retiring Republicans are in reliably red districts.

The congressional district Issa has represented since 2001 - California's 49th - is one of 23 won by Democrat Hillary Clinton in the 2016 presidential election that are currently held by Republicans, who are now considered vulnerable in this November's congressional elections.

But Issa may still be on the ballot in 2018. "Therefore, there are a lot of Republicans in that category looking at polling data and deciding, 'Do I want to put up with this environment?' I think there are going to be many who do not want to".

Issa was a national figure and a staple on cable talk shows when he chaired the House Oversight House Oversight and Government Reform Committee from from 2011 to 2015. The fifth, Martha McSally of Arizona, is seeking the state's open Senate seat in a competitive primary against Tea Partier Kelli Ward and controversial former sheriff Joe Arpaio. His ratings are also far worse than any first-term president when the unemployment rate is under 5 percent. He won by about 1,600 votes in his last election and Democratic challengers have lined up to take him on in a midterm election that generally favors the party not in control of the White House. They also have levels of support for the President's agenda similar to those of their respective parties. First, they have 15 retirements of their own. The recent results in Virginia and subsequent Republican departures suggest this phenomenon may be in effect. We are deeply sorry that he will be retiring at the end of his term, but we look forward to continuing our important work with him until then.

Issa would have been defending a district where demographics have shifted during his time in office, mirroring California's Democratic tilt. Members from either party planning to run for another office tend to run for Senate seats or governorships.

They have also pushed for language that says Cox would make the appointments "in consultation" with Democrats, suggesting that the Democratic leader might propose Democrats for certain committee slots.
