Plane Almost Lands on Other Plane on Occupied Runway In San Francisco

Clearance was provided for Aeromexico Flight 668 on SFO Airport's Runway 28R, but for reasons not known, the aircraft's pilots aligned the plane with Runway 28L, located next to the originally assigned runway, ABC 7 News reported.

The safety board report also revealed that a Compass Airlines plane in February was forced to abort a landing because a Virgin America jet was lined up and waiting to take off on the same runway.

Air traffic controllers instructed the Aeromexico flight's crew to go around again, Gregor said.

According to airport officials an Aeromexico flight was cleared to land on runway 28 right, but when the plane was about a mile away, controllers noticed the plane was lined up for 28 left.

That incident led to changes in control tower staffing at night and procedures pilots must follow when landing at the airport during certain nighttime hours.

The plane later safely landed, Gregor said. Aeromexico says they are "investigating the events". "The good news is the controller recognized it and the system worked".

In July, an Air Canada jet with 140 people on board almost landed on one of the airport's taxiways where four planes were waiting to take off, prompting the FAA to issue new rules for nighttime landings and control tower staffing at the airport. The FAA wants to know how this keeps happening in San Francisco.
