The Swedish clothing store known as H&M may have apologized for an advertisement showing a black child wearing a sweatshirt that said "coolest monkey in the jungle", but that apology was clearly not accepted in South Africa, as protests by the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) ended with serious property damage.

Television footage showed clothing in one of the South African stores scattered everywhere, after yesterday's protests.

EFF leader Julius Malema said he didn't regret taking the action on Saturday (Sunday NZ Time), the South African Broadcasting Corporation reported.

Protesters have stormed and trashed an H&M store in South Africa after a controversial advert.

Police spokesman Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said police had to intervene and disperse a crowd using rubber bullets when protesters entered an H& M shop in East Rand Mall and stole several items. One person reported seeing EFF supporters looting the store before police arrived, evacuated the store and closed it, with some protesters still inside. "I get people's opinions, but they are not mine", she wrote.

Others pointed out that the mess and chaos caused would also be left to black workers to clean up.
