As the number of Erie County high school students protest gun violence during the National School Walkout continues to grow, two local Catholic high schools say they are taking a different approach.

After a former student opened fire on high school students and staff in Florida last month, killing 17 and wounding at least 16 more, people across the nation have called for stricter gun control.

Those students favoring the walkout say they have gotten RSVPs from 2,300 of the almost 2,700 students at Walton, but McNeill said it's her understanding the number of students who have signed up online is about 1,000 students. "It's about school safety and student voice, as students grapple with their role in the world and their ability to impact their surroundings".

Somerville students were expected to hold their second walkout Wednesday along with students at Arlington High School and Granite States Arts Academy, according to Students Against Gun Violence, the group of high schoolers organizing the walkouts.

"The tragedies in Marshall County and Parkland have awakened us to the fact that when it comes to school safety, the status quo is unacceptable, and we have to be the change we want to see", Byerman said in a news release about the events.

In Union, School District Superintendent Steve Weinhold said so far, only a few students have expressed interest in the walkout.

The rallies are to be held in response to the February 14 school shooting in Parkland, Florida and is scheduled for 10 a.m. on Wednesday, March 14.

Students who arrive late or miss class are to be marked tardy or absent, and typical school requirements for attendance are to be followed per student handbooks.
