Looking like dad could give babies a healthier start in life


Infants who resemble their father at birth are more likely to spend time together with their father and, in turn, be healthier when they reach their first birthday, according to new research co-conducted by faculty at Binghamton University, State University of NY.

The study suggests that the extra time and the better bond obtains benefits, including asthma attacks and fewer health care visits.

Babies who look like their dads are healthier, a new research has just revealed. The findings from the data suggested that father-child resemblance induces a father to spend more time with their baby in turn engaging in positive parenting.

If a father thought their baby resembled them, they spent on average 2.5 more days every month involved in their child's upbringing than those who didn't feel the same connection, the research found.

'The main explanation is that frequent father visits allow for greater parental time for caregiving and supervision, and for information gathering about child health and economic needs, ' he continued.

"Greater efforts could be made to encourage these fathers to frequently engage their children through parenting classes, health education, and job training to enhance earnings", said Polachek.

Evolutionary theory says that parents spend more time looking after children who are genetically related to them, which increases the odds that the babies will grow up, have their own offspring and pass on their genes, Live Science noted.

Following the families for over a year, researchers concluded that the babies who spend more time with their fathers "have significantly more favourable health conditions".
