Federer wins, Djokovic out at Indian Wells


After both players spurned opportunities at the start of the decider, it was Daniel who made the first move by establishing a 4-1 advantage as Djokovic appeared to wilt in the Californian heat.

Also, American Taylor Fritz defeated Fernando Verdasco of Spain, 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 (7/1), Croatia's Borna Coric breezed past Roberto Bautista 6-1, 6-3 and Pablo Carreno-Busta of Spain, stopped Russian Daniil Medvedev 6-1, 7-5.

"The plan wasn't to hit drop shots", Federer said.

Federer is making his 17th appearance in the California desert and is assured of remaining world No1 if he makes it to the semifinals.

Speaking to the media after the match, Djokovic said, "It felt like my first match on tour".
