Manchester United captain Michael Carrick has announced his intention to retire at the end of the season and join Jose Mourinho's coaching staff. "You can't live like you've had a career before you've had the career - you've got to earn it".

He said that a move into coaching at United was "looking likely".

Carrick recently confirmed that he will be retiring from football at the end of the season, but has backed 21-year-old McTominay to go on and achieve great success at the club.

Carrick added: "Scott has had a similar ride to Marcus (Rashford)". That's pretty much where I am at'.

Carrick has seen his playing time this season limited after having gone minor surgery to correct an irregular heart rhythm.

He returned to action last month but, speaking at a news conference ahead of Tuesday's Champions League last-16 match against Sevilla, Carrick confirmed the current campaign will be his last. We're still talking about it, to be honest, so there's nothing to totally confirm as yet.

At least I could decide and not be forced because of that, so I was determined to get back fit.
