Tiger Woods, Ernie Els to be named 2019 Presidents Cup captains


Tiger Woods and Ernie Els faced off in a playoff at the end of the 2003 Presidents Cup.

Tiger Woods will reportedly serve as the USA team's captain for the Presidents Cup in Melbourne, Australia in 2019 and it is expected that he'll be introduced on Tuesday at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, according to Alex Miceli of Morning Read. They spoke on condition of anonymity because the captain selections have not been announced.

Els and Woods could not separated, however, exchanging clutch par saves up to the fourth extra hole before darkness descended at Fancourt and the captains Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player agreed to call the first ever tied Presidents Cup.

Woods has been heavily involved in team event while not playing in recent years because of back injuries.

Woods referred to it at the time as one of his most nerve-wracking moments. The International team's only victory was in 1998 at Royal Melbourne.

Woods, who was an assistant captain last year when sidelined with back problems and will fill a similar position this year when the U.S. take on Europe in the Ryder Cup in France, could find himself filling the role of playing the captain in Australia.

The Presidents Cup has found tremendous corporate support with Italian carmaker Alfa Romeo, Citibank and Rolex, but the matches lack a competitive balance.
