Remembering Pi: Google Doodle honours mathematical constant with apple pies

Today, Google homepages across the world are featuring something delectable and irrational at the same time.

Pi Day is dedicated to the mathematical constant, Pi, and is celebrated every year on March 14 since 3, 1, and 4 are the first three significant digits of pi. Pi Day honours the mathematical constant, Pi - which is notated by the Greek letter "p".

Commemorating the day, Google has posted a doodle, which includes the more edible "Pie", baked by award-winning pastry chef, Dominique Ansel. Nowadays, Pi Day is often associated with food - perhaps pizza, or a meat pie, but in this case, a classic American apple pie with a French twist.

The day is observed by the scientific community in the West with a slice of sweet pie.

According to piday.org, Pi has been calculated to over one trillion digits beyond its decimal point.

The symbol was first used in 1706 by William Jones. The topics this year include calculations for Martian earthquakes, helium rain on Jupiter, and the rotation rate of the first interstellar visitor ever discovered, asteroid 'Oumuamua.
