Teacher 'Accidentally' Fires Gun In Class


It's so insane that the teacher teaching them about gun safety shoots one off and hits the ceiling. The bullet ricocheted off the ceiling, injuring three students - one of whom, a 17-year-old, was left with bullet fragments in his neck. Alexander was demonstrating how to handle a gun safely when it fired.

"It's just so insane, I can't believe it", he said.

The incident comes amid a national debate on school safety and whether teachers should be armed on school campuses.

The teen's father, Fermin Gonzales, said he rushed his son to the hospital after the 17-year-old returned from school with blood on his shirt and a neck injury.

Sand City police Chief Brian Ferrante told KSBW, "I have concerns about why he (Alexander) was displaying a loaded firearm in a classroom".

He said the student was not struck with a bullet and it was "not life threatening".

Alexander has been placed on administrative leave for the duration of the on-going investigation. Alexander is also a police officer and Seaside mayor pro tem.

His administration of justice class at Seaside High School is designed for students considering careers in law enforcement. As some of you may know, the teacher is a reserve police officer.

The district said in a statement that, " California law prohibits firearms on campus, and MPUSD's Board of Education policy prohibits any person other than authorized law enforcement or security personnel from possessing weapons, imitation firearms, or risky instruments of any kind in school buildings, on school grounds or buses, or at a school-related or school-sponsored activity away from school, or while going to or coming from school".
