Finland tops ranking of countries with happiest population, immigrants


The top 10 countries have been generally the same for the past two years with the exception of a few, small changes. Finland is at the top of both rankings in this report, with the happiest immigrants, and the happiest population in general.

According to Jeffrey Sachs, a leading USA development economist who contributed to the report, "the U.S. happiness ranking is falling, in part because of the ongoing epidemics of obesity, substance abuse, and untreated depression".

For the first time the United Nations also examined the happiness levels of immigrants in each country, and found Finland also scored highest.

"Four different countries have held the top spot in the four most recent reports- Denmark, Switzerland, Norway and now Finland".

The rankings by the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network's 2018 World Happiness checked for things such as GDP per capita, social support, healthy life expectancy, social freedom, generosity and absence of corruption. The survey of 156 countries reports that people living in Burundi are the most unhappy, while those of the Central African Republic, South Sudan, Tanzania and Yemen follow closely behind. Aside from some minor shuffling, those countries all placed highly previous year as well. This is worse than the country's position of 136 out of '80 countries it was ranked in 2016. It is also among the least corrupt and the most socially progressive.

"I think people in Finland feel happy because they understand the essence of life can be very simple".

Venezuela recorded the biggest fall in happiness, outstripping even Syria, although in absolute terms it remains a mid-ranking country. S. where the prevalence of all three has grown faster than in most other countries.

The importance of social factors in the happiness of all populations, whether migrant or not, is emphasized in Chapter 6, where the happiness bulge in Latin America is found to depend on the greater warmth of family and other social relationships there, and to the greater importance that people there attach to these relationships.
