'Any actions & tricks to split China are doomed to failure' - Xi

While most of Xi's power flows from his roles as party chief and supreme military commander, being president-or "chairman" in Chinese-gives him legal standing as head of state.

As an indication of what is to come, Xi stressed the absolute leadership of the ruling Communist Party - of which he is head - in all aspects of Chinese life. Xi and his allies have systematically strengthened their position within the CCP by purging opposition officials from positions of power using anti-corruption campaigns.

Political analysts see the creation of the anti-graft agency as part of efforts to enforce party control over an increasingly complex society and government. Chinese government censors were overwhelmed by a tide of online criticism for several hours after the February 25 announcement, an indication that such levels of criticism were wholly unanticipated.

Xi's new power might provide reassurance to investors who believe that bureaucratic resistance has slowed his reform agenda.

The Chinese central bank was being given responsibility for drafting important laws covering banking and insurance sector, with regulation over the $42 trillion sector becoming more streamlined and tighter.
