While most of Xi's power flows from his roles as party chief and supreme military commander, being president-or "chairman" in Chinese-gives him legal standing as head of state.

As an indication of what is to come, Xi stressed the absolute leadership of the ruling Communist Party - of which he is head - in all aspects of Chinese life. Xi and his allies have systematically strengthened their position within the CCP by purging opposition officials from positions of power using anti-corruption campaigns.

Comparing the process to materialise the blueprint to "another Long March", led by Mao Zedong during Chinese revolution, Xi warned the whole nation against being satisfied with the status quo, indulging oneself in ease and comfort, or letting delight dispel worries.

With pictures of ecstatic citizens standing in applause, happily tearful legislators and even a social media game, China's propaganda drive has kicked into high gear following Xi Jinping's unanimous reappointment as president. However, the removal of term limits alone does not necessarily mean that Xi will remain president until his death.

The legislature also approved the appointment of Yang Xiaodu as director for the National Supervisory Commission, created from a merger of the party's internal anti-graft watchdog with one that oversees civil servants.

The Chinese central bank was being given responsibility for drafting important laws covering banking and insurance sector, with regulation over the $42 trillion sector becoming more streamlined and tighter. Xi also invoked China's historical achievements in governance and culture and stressed the importance of national unity as it strove to reach new goals in poverty alleviation and economic development in coming years.
